The East African Community Competition Authority (EACCA) has announced its intention to investigate the proposed acquisition of sole control over Europcar Mobility Group S.A. by Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft (Volkswagen).

The transaction involves Volkswagen acquiring sole control of Europcar through a share acquisition. Volkswagen is a global automotive group whose brands include Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini, Scania, MAN, Škoda, SEAT/CUPRA, and Ducati, among others. In East Africa, Volkswagen has operations in Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

Europcar is a global mobility services provider primarily engaged in vehicle rental services, including cars, vans, and, to a lesser extent, trucks, as well as car-sharing services. Within the EAC, Europcar operates through independent franchisees who manage their businesses under the Europcar brand.

The EACCA will assess whether the proposed transaction is likely to substantially lessen competition within the EAC or otherwise raise public interest concerns under the East African Community Competition Act, 2006.

Interested stakeholders, including competitors, customers, and suppliers, have been invited to submit comments to the Authority by 25 August 2026.

This transaction highlights the EACCA's continued scrutiny of regional mergers and acquisitions involving multinational businesses operating across East Africa.
